“Smooth Float” airfoil drying system. The Smooth Float airfoil was specifically designed for drying of coatings involving thin or lightweight films, very low web tension, and/or drying temperatures that may range from 125°F to 500°F. By providing a continuous cushion of heated air, the process web is supported through the entire dryer without any physical contact. Also, the unique contour of our airfoil serves to “hold” the web against the air stream so as to smooth out wrinkles and flatten any edge curl that may exist in the web.
Drying Solutions for High Precision Wide-Web Applications
Customer specification; “high precision drying and curing for a coated web that is 16 feet wide and moving at 1200 fpm”. The side-to-side air temperature variation was critical for achieving even drying/curing and subsequent product performance. The spec called for a variation that did not exceed +/-5°F. Special emphasis was put on this criterion in the design phase which included computer modeling via Finite Element Fluid Flow software and scale model testing. During the performance trials of the installed 100 foot dryer, the customer was astonished (it happens a lot!) to verify the side-to-side temperature variation of +/-0.6°F across the 16 foot wide web!!
